Adjustment of status
Adjustment of status, also known as AOS, is the process by means of which a foreigner applies for the permanent legal resident status in the United States. For family-based petitions, the applicant can qualify for AOS through a permanent U.S. resident or a U.S. citizen petitioner. The applicant can also qualify for a Permanent Resident Card, also known as Green Card, based on employment. The process duration varies. A correct submission of applications and supporting evidence are the basis for approval. Once the application is approved, the foreigner will receive an I-551 Permanent Resident Card. The foreigner can wait for approval in the United States.
